Why Forklift Training Is So Important

If you want to operate a forklift, you need to have a license. This is for good reason, as forklift trucks are notoriously dangerous in the wrong hands. Not only do you need to know how to drive it correctly, you also need to know how to safely use it to carry loads. Forklift training ensures you know the correct way to operate this piece of machinery, and gives you a certificate to prove your capability to employers.

The Dangers Of Forklifts

We can’t stress enough how important forklift training is. When things go wrong, the results can be catastrophic. Potential outcomes of improper forklift use include:

  • Overloaded trucks can become unstable and even tip. This means the load could fall and the truck could overturn, potentially leading to injury to the operator and people in the vicinity.
  • Inappropriate speed leading to accidents and injuries. Forklifts can be very fast, and the operator needs to pay attention to their surroundings at all times.
  • Overhead obstructions can lead to collisions if the user isn’t aware. Forklifts have a rising plate, which protrudes outwards from the vehicle. If the plate were to catch on something above, damage to the vehicle or injury could occur.
  • When carrying a load, forklifts will have blind spots. The operator needs to be aware of where pedestrians are, and must plan their route to ensure there are no hazards in their way.

Counterbalance Forklift Training

The counterbalance forklift is the most commonly used forklift truck in the UK. These trucks usually have two forks at the front, which is where the load is placed. The back of the truck is weighed down with a counterweight, to minimise the risk of tipping when a heavy load is placed on the forks. It’s still very important to have the proper forklift training certification. This ensures that you know how to calculate the maximum load and operate the forklift safely.

Telescopic Handler Training

A telescopic handler isn’t technically a forklift. However, you still need training to use them, and they aren’t all that dissimilar to forklifts. Telescopic handlers (also known as telehandlers) have a plate attached to an arm. This means that they can move loads up and over obstacles, unlike forklifts which can only move things up and down. Telehandlers have a longer reach and are often used on construction sites.
